Acting career
Born Mavis Chin in Jamaica to a Chinese father and Jamaican mother, Hammond moved to England in her 20s, beginning her acting career. She worked widely on the British stage, in productions including “The Crucible,” “Peer Gynt,” and “Macbeth.” In 1986, she co-founded the Talawa Theatre Company, a prominent Black acting company. Hammond became best known for her performances on British TV, especially as she played Blossom Jackson on the soap opera “EastEnders” from 1994 to 1997. Another prominent TV role was Auntie Susu in “Desmond’s” and its spinoff, “Porkpie.” Hammond also appeared in the 2006 Doctor Who episode “Rise of the Cybermen” as well as in movies including “Kinky Boots” and “10,000 BC.” In 2005, Hammond was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).
