Pamela Salem’s legacy
Born in Bombay, India, Salem went to Heidelberg University in Germany and studied acting at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London before launching a career on stage and screen. She got her start on television in 1969 and had appearances on an array of British television shows before jumping to the big screen in 1976.
Her first major film role came in 1978, when she appeared alongside Connery in “The First Great Train Robbery.” However, more notable might be her television role from the year prior: Toos in the popular television series “Doctor Who,” in the well-regarded four-part saga “The Robots of Death.” She played alongside Connery again in 1983’s unofficial James Bond film, “Never Say Never Again,” then returned to “Doctor Who” in 1988 as Professor Rachel Jensen for the four-part “Remembrance of the Daleks,” the final appearance in the original series of the Doctor’s most notorious adversaries.
Salem also appeared in “Blake 7,” “The Tripods,” “The West Wing,” and many others. She moved to Los Angeles in the 1990s and then to Miami, where she took only occasional roles in film and television. In 2012, she reprised her role as Professor Rachel Jensen for the Doctor Who audio drama, “Counter-Measures.”
