Allen played Uncle Woody, the husband of Aunt Esther on the popular sitcom “Sanford and Son.” He was Ned the Wino on “Good Times” and had a recurring role as mechanic Merle the Earl on the 1970s TV detective series “Starsky and Hutch.” He retired from acting in 1985 but continued to make public appearances to meet his fans.
