Remembering Annette Funicello (1942–2013)

by Legacy Staff

Annette Funicello’s fans pay tribute and remember all the things that made America love her.

When an icon of pop culture dies, we at Legacy watch as fans come together in the online Guest Book. There, they share memories of someone they loved without actually being close to them. Catchphrases and song lyrics, favorite works, recollections of brief encounters with the celebrity – they all come out in a flood of reminiscences that build a beautiful picture of a beloved star’s body of work.

So it was when Annette Funicello died April 8, 2013 at the age of 70, from complications of multiple sclerosis. The former Mouseketeer, singing star and teen idol is deeply missed, as evidenced by the 1000+ fans who signed her Guest Book within 24 hours of its creation. In their comments posted to the Guest Book, they remembered all the things that made America love her.

“As a child, I remember The Mickey Mouse Club teaching me to spell M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E! One CLASSY LADY! May God give your family strength and comfort through this difficult time.”

“Over the years I have often thought of you. I loved your teenage soap opera type episodes. You will never be forgotten !!!!!! You are an Icon… Forever …. Indeed !!!”

~Mae Tyler, Utica, New York

“I so loved you Annette. I still have your album “Annette Sings Anka” now downloaded to my MP3. You are with the Lord free to dance and sing again. Blessings and Peace. Your sister in Christ Jesus,”

“Annette will be missed I am always looking for the beach movies to watch which the old movie channels never show enough of.thanks for your bravery you inspired others. You are now reunited with Walt.”

“As not only a fan of her entertainment skills & talents, I am mourning the loss of a fellow MS fighter. She has been & shall always be a great source of inspiration to me as I fight this disease myself. May God comfort her family & friends during this difficult time.”

~Sheri Millikin, Hanover, Virginia

There are hundreds more notes and memories where those came from, left by fans who are still Mouseketeers at heart and, we believe, would agree with us when we say, “See you real soon, Annette. Why? Because we like you.”
