Rich Stubler (1949–2023), former Canadian Football League coach

by Eric San Juan

Rich Stubler was a longtime coach in the Canadian Football League (CFL), known for his defensive genius that resulted in five Grey Cup wins over the course of his career.

Rich Stubler’s legacy

Stubler built his reputation in football on a deep knowledge of the defensive game. He began coaching in 1971, first at Roaring Fork High School, where he led the team to a state championship and 30 wins in three seasons, then to a series of positions with a variety of college teams.

In 1983, Stubler moved to the CFL, where he would make his mark as a defensive giant. He first joined the Hamilton Tiger-Cats as defensive coordinator, helping the team win the CFL Grey Cup championship in 1986. He joined the Edmonton Eskimos in 1991, and in 1993, won his second Grey Cup. He briefly coached for the University of Oregon from 1995 to 1997 before returning to the CFL.

In 2000, he was defensive coordinator for the Grey Cup-winning BC Lions, then repeated his win in 2004, this time with the Toronto Argonauts. In 2014, he won his fifth Grey Cup-winning team with the Calgary Stampeders. His final year with the CFL was in 2021, with the Argonauts, a team he did four stints with overall.
