Robbie Bachman (1953–2023), Bachman-Turner Overdrive drummer

by Linnea Crowther

Robbie Bachman was the drummer for Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO), known for 1970s hits including “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet.”

Musical career

Bachman and his brother, Randy Bachman, founded Brave Belt in 1971 in their home of Winnipeg, Manitoba, on the heels of Randy’s departure from the Guess Who. After two albums, Brave Belt morphed into BTO with the addition of brother Tim Bachman on guitar and Fred Turner on bass. The band quickly achieved success in their native Canada, and their second and third albums brought them international fame. They had a No. 1 hit with “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” in 1974, with other popular singles including “Takin’ Care of Business,” “Let it Ride,” and “Roll on Down the Highway,” the latter of which was written by Bachman. Bachman is also credited with designing the band’s gear logo, which led fans to call themselves gearheads. He left the band in 1979, though he rejoined for a late-1980s reunion. Along with his fellow BTO members, Bachman was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2014.
