Ron Hale (1946–2024), longtime Ryan’s Hope, General Hospital actor

by Eric San Juan

Ron Hale was an Emmy-nominated actor best known for his long tenure on the daytime soaps “Ryan’s Hope” and “General Hospital.”

Ron Hale’s legacy

Michigan-born actor Ron Hale got his start on television screens in the late 1960s and ‘70s, appearing in episodes of “Search for Tomorrow” and “Love is a Many Splendored Thing,” as well as playing Watergate burglar Frank Sturgis in the political classic, “All the President’s Men.” However, it was being cast in the then-new soap opera, “Ryan’s Hope,” that made his career.

Hale played Dr. Roger Coleridge, a character who proved essential enough that he appeared in the show’s entire 14-year run. Hale was in 909 episodes of the popular soap spanning from 1975 to 1989. For his work, he was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor at both the 1979 and 1980 Daytime Emmy Awards.

Just a few years after “Ryan’s Hope” ended, Hale ensured his place in soap history when, in 1995, he was cast in “General Hospital,” one of the most popular daytime dramas of all time. Hale played Mike Corbin on that show for 15 years and 238 episodes – plus brought the character to the “General Hospital” spin-off, “Port Charles” –  before largely retiring from acting in 2010. Hale’s final work was a small part in “The Ghost and the Whale,” a 2017 film.
