Roxanne Lowit (1942–2022), photographed art & fashion legends in rare backstage moments

by Linnea Crowther

Roxanne Lowit was an iconic fashion photographer known for her intimate behind-the-scenes images of models and other celebrities.

Documenting the rise of supermodels

Lowit studied textile design and worked at that before discovering her love for photography. She also painted, and when a person didn’t have time to sit for a portrait, she would photograph them for later reference. She also photographed her own textile designs at fashion shows. As she excelled in her textile work, she began rubbing elbows with art- and fashion-world celebrities including Andy Warhol, Salvador Dalí, and Yves St. Laurent. Lowit’s behind-the-scenes shots of the icons and their parties and fashion shows led to her career in fashion photography. By the late 1980s, her backstage access left her perfectly placed to document the rise of supermodels in the early 1990s. Her well-known images included a candid shot of supermodels Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, and Linda Evangelista in a bathtub at a 1990 party at the Ritz.

Notable quote

“Sometimes I’m a voyeur. I love watching people. I also love taking pictures of people who like having their picture taken; Andy Warhol, Salvador Dalí, people like that. I guess I was lucky enough to be in the right places at the right times.” —from 1 2013 interview for Interview magazine
