Stella Tennant’s career as a model took off when she was photographed for British Vogue in 1993. She was known for her androgynous looks and became a favorite of designer Gianni Versace. She also worked with Calvin Klein and Jean Paul Gaultier. Tennant was featured on the cover of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar and was the face of Chanel for a time in the 1990s. Outside of modeling, she was an environmental advocate promoting less energy use.
She was not sure she wanted to be a model
“I didn’t know if I wanted to be objectified… I thought it was a big, shallow world and I wasn’t really sure if I liked the look of it.” —From an interview with the Evening Standard in 2016
