Tony Roberts (1928–2023), legendary Notre Dame broadcaster

by Eric San Juan

Tony Roberts was a longtime sports broadcaster who spent 26 years calling games for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team.

Tony Roberts’ legacy

Born in Chicago and graduating from Columbia College with a degree in journalism, Roberts started in local radio in Iowa and Indiana before moving to Washington, D.C. There, he broadcast games for the MLB team the Washington Senators, before the team moved to Minnesota and became the Twins, and the Capital/Washington Bullets, the NBA team that became Wizards.

It was in 1980 that Roberts truly made his name. He started calling games for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team, a post he would hold for 26 years. As Notre Dame returned to prominence in college football, Roberts became known as the voice of the team and was a mainstay on their broadcasts.

Over the course of his career, he also broadcast for the Olympics, golf, the NFL, and others. Roberts’ efforts earned him entry into the National Radio Hall of Fame, as well as the College Football Hall of Fame, Indiana Broadcasters Hall of Fame, and Holiday Bowl Hall of Fame. He was also a Chris Schenkel Award in 2005.
