Tyrone Proctor (1953–2020), legendary “Soul Train” dancer who pioneered waacking

by Linnea Crowther

Tyrone “The Bone” Proctor was a dancer and choreographer who became known as a regular dancer on “Soul Train,” where he popularized the dance style waacking.

From underground clubs to national TV

Waacking, also known as punking, is a dance form that emphasizes arm movements, similar to voguing or locking. It grew from the underground LGBTQ+ club scene in Los Angeles in the early 1970s. Proctor brought the dance to Don Cornelius’ hit TV dance show “Soul Train,” where it found its way into households nationwide. In 1973, Cornelius hand picked Proctor to join the Don Cornelius & The Soul Train Gang Presents stadium tour. Proctor went on to choreograph music videos, including Jody Watley’s “Still a Thrill,” in which he also appeared. He also choreographed videos for other artists including Taylor Dayne, the Isley Brothers, and New Kids on the Block, with whom he was nominated in 1989 for a MTV Video Music Award for Best Choreography.
