Acting career
Carlson began her career as a model, which led to acting roles. Her first Hammer film was 1968’s “Dracula Has Risen from the Grave,” in which she starred opposite the Hammer Horror legend Christopher Lee (1922–2015). She went on to star in “Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed” (1969) with Peter Cushing (1913–1994) as well as “The Horror of Frankenstein” (1970) for Hammer. Carlson’s other movies include “The Best House in London,” “Pussycat, Pussycat, I Love You,” and “Vampira,” which was released in the U.S. as “Old Dracula.” She also starred in the British TV crime drama “Spyder’s Web.” Carlson largely retired from acting after the 1970s, though she returned for occasional appearances, including in the 2019 movie “House of the Gorgon.”
Carlson on her retirement from acting
“It was never my intention to. Because I thought I was really going places. The film industry changed for one thing. There was a lot of nudity introduced and I wasn’t into that, because I’d had a very strict upbringing and my father was a retired air force officer. He worked in the Ministry of Defense. It was all very—I had a very strict upbringing. I wouldn’t think of taking my clothes off. But it seemed at the time that was going to be the only option….” —from a 2011 interview for the Actor’s Notebook
