Virginia McLaurin (1909–2022), 113-year-old honored at White House

by Linnea Crowther

Virginia McLaurin became a viral sensation when she danced with the Obamas at the White House when she was 106.

Extraordinary life

After working as a seamstress and at a laundry, McLaurin began a decades-long post-retirement career as a volunteer. Beginning in 1983, she volunteered 40 hours a week as a foster grandmother at Roots Public Charter School, continuing past the age of 100. In 2016, friends connected her to President Barack Obama, who invited her to visit the White House during Black History Month. The video of McLaurin dancing joyfully with the president and first lady was widely shared and seen by millions. The following month, she was honored with the President’s Volunteer Service Award for her many years of volunteerism.

Notable quote

“I was so happy to meet the black president. I was so happy to shake his hand, and his wife was so nice. It was the joy of my entire life. I can die smiling now.” —as quoted by the Washington Post
