Yuriko Kikuchi (1920–2022), legendary Martha Graham dancer

by Kirk Fox

Yuriko Kikuchi, using the single name Yuriko, was a longtime legendary dancer in the Martha Graham Dance Company.

Modern Dance Legend

Yuriko Kikuchi learned to dance as a child when her mother enrolled her in a local dance studio in California. Her dance career grew when she joined Dorothy Lyndall’s dance company in Los Angeles. During World War II, when many with Japanese ancestry were sent to federal internment camps in the United States, Yuriko was interned at the Gila River Relocation Camp in Arizona. After she was released in 1943, she went to New York City, and joined the famous Martha Graham Dance Company in 1944. She was a longtime dancer in the company, appearing in “Appalachian Spring” and “Cave of the Heart.” She performed on Broadway and in the film version of “The King and I,” and started her own modern dance company.
