Costell Akrie was a U.S. Air Force veteran who served in Korea. He later became chief of veterans affairs for the Bay Area Urban League. He was also one of the first African American managers for United Airlines, working at the Oakland and San Francisco airports. Akrie was devoted to community service – his initiatives included starting the program Bikes Unlimited, loaning bicycles to children who couldn’t afford them.
