Eugene Thompson was a beloved barber known throughout his Mississippi town. “This whole community knew him,” said one friend. “No matter who you was, you knew Eugene.” Thompson died of COVID-19 just six days after his 46th birthday. Family, friends, and customers paid tribute to the barber’s kindness and love for community. Many times when his customers didn’t have money, Thompson cut their hair for free. He didn’t see Black hair or White hair — just people. And he wanted to use his expertise as a way to unite Black and White members of the community. “He wanted to see Brookhaven come together.”
