Gene Shay was a legendary Philadelphia radio DJ who was the longtime host of the Philadelphia Folk Festival. His radio show, focusing on folk music, provided a blueprint for new generations of DJs. It also provided the stage for historic moments, as when Joni Mitchell debuted her song “Both Sides Now” on Shay’s show. Shay was a mainstay of Philadelphia radio for more than 50 years before his retirement in 2015.
