Obituary

George J. Foerst Jr., age 99, passed away due to the COVID-19 virus on April 9th at the Barnegat Nursing Home where he resided since December 2019… He was a Postal Service employee until he moved to the General Services Administration (GSA). He then moved to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Division where he completed his Federal career as a Chief Appraiser (GS14) in 1985… In retirement George was called “The Captain” by friends and family due to his lifelong passion for sailing that started at age 16 when he made his first boat out of old fence pickets, a small tree trunk, and a shower curtain for a sail. He sailed his Pearson 33′ sailboat that he loved, until the age of 95.

“My fondest memory of Mr. Foerst was the afternoon he took me and Lynn sailing on Barnegat Bay. I was amazed at the way he handled the boat, at an age when many other sailers would have retired to dry dock. He truly was “The Captain” – and a kind and gentle man.”
