Patrick Johnson was incarcerated at a low-security prison in Oakdale, Louisiana, on a nonviolent drug charge when he became the first federal inmate known to die of COVID-19. He had served almost 13 years of a 27-year sentence, and in the months before his death, he was pursuing sentence reduction under the new First Step Act.
