Shannon Bennett was a deputy in the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. Praised for his work to unite the LGBTQ community and the sheriff’s office, he had recently worked as a school resource officer at Deerfield Beach Elementary School.
Bennett had recently proposed to his “soulmate” Jonathan Frey, and the two were to be married later this year.
Reportedly, in the aftermath of the 2016 mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Bennett parked his police car outside LGBTQ establishments to help patrons feel safe.
