Obituary
Walter James Amoss Jr., beloved husband of the late Berthe Marks Amoss, father of six sons, former CEO of New Orleans-based Lykes Bros. Steamship Co. and founder of Seapoint, died March 30 at the New Orleans home of his son and daughter-in-law, Dr. John and Dunbar Amoss, due to complications from coronavirus… After 12 years as president of Lykes, he became the company’s CEO in 1986, until his retirement in 1993. A highlight of Jimmy’s career at Lykes was his role in bringing about the resumption of trade between the U.S. and the People’s Republic of China in 1979.

“No matter his rise through the firm he was always a friend and just a regular guy to everyone there. One of the smartest people I’ve ever known and a true leader by example. He had the respect and admiration of all who knew him and lived life as it should be.”
