The First Snapchat Obit Photo?

by Linnea Crowther

Grandmother remembered with loving obituary and goofy photo straight from Snapchat.

When Rita Tsopas of Dover, New Hampshire, died recently, her family remembered her with a loving obituary — and a goofy photo straight from Snapchat.

The 81-year-old grandmother is smiling warmly in her obituary photo, but you almost can’t tell, because her smile is partially hidden behind a Snapchat filter of Groucho glasses with giant nose, eyebrows, and mustache. The gag is a one-off, never mentioned at all in the obituary. We’re left assuming the lighthearted photo must have reflected Tsopas’ own personality.

The Snapchat obit photo is something you might have expected in an obituary for a young person — Snapchat is a social media platform that’s wildly popular with teens and almost exclusively used by people under 35. But that just makes it all the more charming to see Tsopas and her apparent embrace of the youthful technology.

Will we see more Snapchat photos in obituaries starting now? We’re guessing we will — keep your eyes open for puppy ears and butterfly crowns.
