Lynne Marie Stewart’s legacy
Over a career spanning nearly 150 different roles, Stewart became best known for two strikingly different characters: the grandly charming Miss Yvonne, The Most Beautiful Woman in Puppetland, on “Pee-Wee’s Playhouse,” and Charlie’s strange, eccentric mom on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”
Stewart was part of the famed improvisational comedy group, The Groundlings, in Los Angeles when she met Paul Reubens (1952–2023). Their comedic sensibilities were a good match, so Stewart became Miss Yvonne for his onstage “Pee-Wee Herman Show,” a production that eventually morphed into the iconic 1980s TV series, movies, merchandise and more. Stewart’s portrayal of Miss Yvonne led her to becoming one of the most loved supporting cast members.
She did much more on television than just befriend Pee-Wee. Stewart had early roles in “M*A*S*H,” “One Day at a Time,” “CHiPs,” and other series before enjoying a longer stint on “Laverne & Shirley.” Dozens of other parts followed, including appearances on “Dynasty,” “Night Court,” “Arrested Development,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” and “2 Broke Girls.” Stewart was introduced to a whole new generation of fans when she took on the role of Bonnie Kelly, Charlie’s mom, on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” The provocative comedy showcased a different side of Stewart’s comedic talents, one far removed from her acting as Miss Yvonne.
Stewart never left that lady behind, though. She and Reubens often appeared in character for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, helping lift the spirits of children with terminal illness. The pair remained friends their entire lives.
