College Football Innovator
Mike Leach earned a law degree at Pepperdine University and began his coaching career shortly after. He was an assistant coach with various teams for many years and was hired in 2000 as the head coach at Texas Tech University. He is the winningest coach in the team’s history, known for his innovative high powered “Air Raid” offense. Four of the top nine highest single season passing yard totals are from quarterbacks that he coached. He led Texas Tech to an impressive 11-2 record in 2008. He was fired at the end of the 2009 season after a player accused him of mistreatment when he suffered a concussion. He was hired as head coach of Washington State in 2012 and turned around a subpar program, leading them to a bowl game his second season. The two-time National Coach of the Year winner took over as head coach of Mississippi State in 2020 and was preparing the team for a ReliaQuest bowl game matchup against Illinois at the time of his death.
