I worked for Mrs. Hargreaves and Dr. James F. Hopkins from 1959-1962 on the Henry Clay Papers, transcribing letters, documents and assisting with research. She was a great person as well as a great boss. She was also a friend. We have sent Christmas cards and notes back and forth every year for over 48 years. She was a very talented lady and one whom I admired so much. She was a role model for me. I learned a great deal under her supervision.

Mrs. Hargreaves and her husband Walter were true "salt of the earth" faculty. I admired their commitment to teaching and learning and their honest intellectualism. I became acquainted with them when I came to UK in 1965 as Dean of the College of Business and Economics, of which Walter was a faculty member.

I taught at the University of Kentucky from 1988 to 1998, and I remember Mary Wilma very fondly. Her generation of women historians paved the way for mine, and I am enromously grateful.
