STEPHEN WALTERS
MURRELLS INLET, S.C. — Stephen "Steve" Farley Walters, 83, of Murrells Inlet, S.C., formerly of Williamson, passed away peacefully at home Tues., March 31, 2015, surrounded by his wife and children. He will be dearly missed.
Born Nov. 29, 1931, in Delbarton, W.Va., he was a son of the late Lafe M. Walters and Dolly Bess Sams Walters. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Billy G. Walters of Williamson, Joyce Cranford of Cape Coral, Fla., and Bonnie Burdette of The Woodlands, Texas, and his grandson, Joshua Walters.
Steve was a 1950 graduate of Williamson High School. He served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War and received the Purple Heart. On June 30, 1951, Steve was married to Mary Elia at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Williamson. The loving marriage that he and Mary shared for 63 years simply cannot be described in words. They were best friends, partners, and soul mates; they also shared the knowledge and assurance that they will see each other again after this world has passed. Their four children, Stephen, Torin, Maria and Billy have been blessed all their lives with a father who was a provider, role model, and mentor.
Steve began his work career at Cinderella Coal Company. Over the course of 42 years, he worked as a laborer, chief electrician, superintendent, manager of mines and ultimately as Vice President of Operations of Pittston Coal's Eastern Division. In 2004, Steve and Mary moved to Murrells Inlet where he enjoyed many years golfing and shot three holes in one. Although he was away from West Virginia, he continued to follow his West Virginia Mountaineers and to critique each and every game. His Yorkie, Bear, will miss watching the games with him.
Steve was a member of Grace Baptist Temple in Williamson, WV and of Coastal Bible Church in Murrells Inlet.
In addition to his wife, Mary, Steve is survived by four children Stephen Marquis Walters (Robbin) of Murrells Inlet, Torin Patrick Walters, MD (Terri) of Huntington, W.Va., Maria Walters Hughes (Mark Goldner) of Charleston, W.Va., and William Joseph Walters of Murrells Inlet; grandchildren, Eric Walters, DDS (Michelle) of Oxnard, Calif., Chance Walters of Princeton, W.Va., Chelsey Walters of Murrells Inlet, Brogan, Calla, Torin Andrew, Mara, and Sophia Walters, all of Huntington, andDylan and Eliana Hughes of Charleston, and great-granddaughters, Lily and Clara Walters.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Fri., April 3, at Weaver Mortuary in West Williamson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sat., April 4, at the mortuary. The Reverend Ron Sanger will officiate. Interment is in Mountain View Memory Gardens at Maher, W.Va.
