I was fortunate enough to have spent a lot of time with Pat in front-rows for club, sub-union, and province... he gave me the confidence to know that the tight-head side would always be taken care of. Through this time playing together, we became close friends and that friendship endured even though my life drifted away from Hawkes Bay... always a ready grin and chuckle whenever I made the time to catch-up with him [I sincerely wish I had done this more often]. He was a generous man... his time was valuable and he gave it readily. RIP Bobo... you added massively to my life without really even knowing about it.

Our sincere condolences to all. Mary Claire William, Paul , Christopher and David. I remember you all with very fond memories of your time at HBHS. It was always a pleasure to see Pat turning up to the 3rd XI Cricket games with the sausages and drinks for the barbecue. He was a great friend and a strong supporter of me while he was on the board and we had many happy meetings and discussions since. I
We were unfortunately unable to attend the funeral due to COVID.
Our thoughts are prayers to you all.

One of the old school was Pat, played the game hard, played it fair, shook hands at the end and had a beer. He turned his hand to so many things and had success wherever he went. He was a man of the people and he gave more than he took. Rest in peace big man

The forest is quiet today; a mighty totara has fallen.
The reverberations spread widely among the many people whose lives have been touched by Pat, in so many ways.
Go well Pat. We will miss you.

So many things to say, I was just so sad to hear of Pats passing. I met Pat when he interviewed me for a job many many years ago. I worked for NCS for 17 years. During those 17 years I got to know Pat, he was so proud of his family and his community. He had a heart of gold, I spent many hours talking (and a lot of the time walking) about his family, swimming, surf lifesaving, fitness, restoring old buildings the right way, rugby, saving the world and many things. He always thought of other people and was always there to help, after the Christchurch Earthquakes, Pat and Mary bought myself and my family up to Napier and put us up in the other house on their property and looked after us, I will never forget their kindness and hospitality.
Pat waa always a wonderful host and someone that genuinely cared about people. Condolences to the Benson family.

The first time I met Pat I wore a bright pink shirt. He loves a bright shirt.
Pat was a quiet, understated, modest and humble gentleman. The accolades he got in Rugby and Swimming (his passion) are amazing.
My condolences to the Benson clan.

Dearest Benson family and close friends,

I have had the pleasure of knowing Pat personally through my swimming days back in the 1970s and most recently as General Manager of Napier City Business Association.

"Extraordinary people are those who are present in life through work and living. Pats' presence in both collided, and that is why he will most certainly leave a massive hole in everyone's lives forever"

Our love and thoughts are with you all at this very sad time.

Take care
Pip Thompson

I met Pat when I was working at Manchester Unity and we upgraded to a computer system! Napier Computers were our preferred company. I went to many of the fantastic Christmas Parties put on by Pat (most of Napier did). He was a true gentleman, who would spend time talking with people about anything and everything!
I am shocked to read of Pats passing, and will forever hold memories of this legend of a man!
RIP Pat. You will be sorely missed.

In 1979 I left NZ for the UK. Pat and I kept in regular contact until now. When Pat visited us it was like Father Christmas arriving. His case was packed with Peanut slabs, Biscuits, Marmite and the odd AB jersey. Once 12 bottles of Red Wine from Bridge Pa arrived on my doorstep. Forever generous in nature.
Pat was delighted to discover that quite close by was a little town called Benson in Oxfordshire. So off we went with Ian Peryer for a 'Pat photoshoot'.
Pat managed to achieve so much in his life, he always set the bar high, yet he never took anything or anyone for granted. He made friends wherever he travelled, even in our town of Marlow. People would ask when he was coming back especially during a World Cup Rugby.
Sadly it is coming close to saying our farewell. Although we are unable to be with you in person we will be with you in our thoughts and watching from afar.
To your lovely family (and I had constant up dates with photos) we send all our love and big hugs.
Pat thank you for being our dear friend all these years. You will be hugely missed.
Kathy, Graham and friends from The Prince of Wales in Marlow UK

Condolences to all Benson whanau. Bobo was a real true gentle giant of a man. The stories will be told on Friday 16th next to the Park Bobo packed many a scrum down. Looking back, one needs to see this team & the huge presence Pat had over so many good young rugby players. This team was special, both on & off the field. Respect to the man will be given.
Rest now mighty man.

On behalf of all staff at Education Services,I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to Pat's family.
While our paths crossed because of work, I considered Pat a freind, and I remember the big man fondly.
There was much gentle ribbing whenever Taranaki played Hawkes Bay - I will miss those texts.

My memories of Pat are of a Kind and gentle giant of a man.
He was great friends with my brother, and he was a bit of a legend in years gone past.
He always stopped to say hi and inquire how I was.

Saddened to hear of his departure from this world. May he be blessed into the next.
My sincerest condolences to Pat's family and all his loved ones.
Kind Regards
Maurice McLaughlin
