My deepest sympathy to Jill and the family. Hugh was someone I worked with for 21 years in Local Government and was someone who was up front and direct in his views and opinions at all times. I deeply admired Hugh for that quality because you knew exactly where you stood at all times. I always enjoyed our one on one meetings, he was someone who I could reach out to for support on a number of issues across the Waikato region at all times and will always be remembered for his leadership and support. RIP Hugh

My earliest memories of emergency management were Hugh, Basil Morrison and Ron White calmly arriving and bringing people together, tasking and guiding. At that time, I didn't know who did what, but I do remember that conflicted feeling of being equally immediately reassured when Hugh arrived and equally worried because Hugh had arrived :)
I finally learned to read the smirk on his face and sparkle in his eyes when he invited me to offer my opinion in a room. I swear it amused him no end to watch me give an opinion no one wanted.
His wisdom was always on point. His lessons on navigating politics and leading people were always given with great experience, candor and humour.
I loved every minute I had the privilege of spending with Hugh.

I remember our catch-ups in Canada St, either your office or mine. And road testing a new Honds CRV on your farm. Go well Hugh.
