The service today did him justice both in his working life and as a family man. Like others here, I remember particularly a sympathetic ear and some good advice at a time when I needed it. He was a great public servant and a good man.

Caroline, I was saddened to learn of Gerald's death. He was very kind to me during a difficult period in the early 80's. I enormously appreciated his sage advice. His contribution to New Zealand foreign policy development and execution will long be remembered by those who were privileged to work with him.

I am sad to hear that Gerald has died and we have lost a great New Zealander. Gerald was Colonel Commandant of the New Zealand Intelligence Corps and helped me to host a Singaporean Chief of Defence Intelligence visit. His advice and connection was greatly appreciated. Rest in Peace Gerald.
Regards,
Colonel (Retired) Kevin Arlidge late of the NZIC

Gerald was a fine man, a wonderful chief executive, a great travelling companion, a giant among senior NZ public servants. It was a privilege to be one of his staff for 5 years at MoD.
