Hugh Willis was one of my favourite teachers at Westlake Boys High School. I loved maths and he was a very good teacher. I believe he also initiated the school table tennis championships and I met him a few times many years later with his wife. I got to know we shared a faith in Christ and he was also active in helping others in need and in hiking. My sincere condolences to the family, he was special.

God bless you Mr Willis. You brought Math alive for me with patience and your thoughtfully hand written notebooks. Tramping and cricket wisdom were mixed in for free!

Ex Westlakers 1967 - 72
I was s..t at maths til I had Hugh in the 6 th form. Quite a unique character and never any behaviour issues in his classes . We were lucky to have him. Colin Abercrombie
I remember he patiently taught me to play a forward defensive shot in junior cricket. So well in fact that my strike rate never got above 25!! Robert Mills

I believe he took up the work of setting up all the Bush tracks when he realised that would be far easier than getting my maths marks past the low 50's. I think he was mostly serious in class but not too serious to stop and let us listen to the moon landing. Richard Fanselow

An all round good guy. We are all the poorer for his passing. Peter Meads

Farewell to the man who launched my maths career. David Sanders

There is no doubt that if he could, Bob Davie would have said much the same.

I have very fond memories of Mr Willis my maths teacher at Westlake Boys in 1964. He made maths very understandable for which I am forever thankful. RIP.

I've known Hugh as a special friend, since 1983 . A man of gentlemen qualities, both in the physical but also and more importantly spiritually. I wept inside when the news faltered through, that ,you've being called home . I know that in the appropriate time in the future we'll meet again , shake hands and give each that welcome home hug . Thank you Hugh for your friendship, your guidance, your books , and for kindness and cups of tea .

Hugh´s legacy will be the many bush tracks he made on the North Shore. A pleasure to meet and work along side him.
