WATSON, Jim
I was also inspired by Jim to reach for the top in the challenging world of biopharma. He was passionate about biological science and encouraged the entrepreneurial spirit in all his colleagues. As Paul says I remember well and Watson smile and twinkling eyes as he described his latest scientific adventures. He openly shared his knowledge and experience with the scientific community even as he battled with cancer. I am honoured to have known Jim and send my love and strength to his family and friends. With much Love to All, Jilly F. Evans

WATSON, Jim. Biotech pioneer with cheek: To many who knew him, Jim was a leader, visionary colleague, innovator and loyal friend. He was a scientist at heart with an insatiable appetite for talking science and enjoyed this to his last days. He was enthusiastic, he was energetic and his hard working style was coloured with a creative flair.
He established the Department of Molecular Medicine as a new structure at the University of Auckland. If you told him he ruffled too many feathers, he would reward you with a glint in his eyes and the Watson smile. Then he brought scientists from 16 different countries to New Zealand at Genesis R&D and created opportunities for bioscience research in a hard commercial world.
Jim enjoyed referring to colleagues who had moved on to other laboratories, to executive positions in other companies or to other institutions. He encouraged and supported the Genesis R&D alumni in their new ventures, being a serial entrepreneur himself.
Jim's office was accessible to all. Jim and Margaret opened their home to us. I am truly fortunate to have known and worked with Jim at the university and at Genesis R&D. I am grateful for his continuing support in my subsequent professional life. In sharing the sadness of his passing with Margaret and Jim's family, I wish to acknowledge Jim as an enduring inspiration.
