John passed away five days prior to the death of my mother, Joan Ryder. I was about to alert him to her passing, when I learned that he himself had departed-following an illustrious career. My late father and John had been good friends (not always easy since John was Board Chair at NPBHS whilst my father was Headmaster). John was deeply respected by all members of my family and we are saddened to learn of his passing... Paul Ryder (Sydney)

I was deeply saddened to learn of John's passing. Growing up alongside his son, Andrew, in New Plymouth, I remember vividly the energy and intellect of the man I knew then as "Mr. Laurenson"-later, of course, as "His Honour". I lost touch after moving away to attend university, but I recall that John was an intellectual force throughout my time knowing him and the family. Our thoughts are with Helen and the family during this difficult time.

Deepest sympathy Helen and family on the loss of a dearly loved husband father and grandfather. I and my twin brother Malcolm grew up with John in Karori, going to Karori School , the Methodist Bible Class and Wellington College together . We had shifted to Lower Hutt and then Auckland and lost touch ,but I have very fond memories of John as a good friend and mate in those long ago days. Again our sincere condolences. John was a really good bloke.
