Len was a wonderful colleague, friend, supporter of all-comers and mentor to many. He leaves a large, Len-sized gap in the Otago bar. My heartfelt condolences to his family. Sally McMillan.

I worked part-time as Len´s PA when I was a law student at Otago University. Len was a kind boss and generous mentor. I witnessed the dedication and care he put into his work and clients, and will always be grateful for his formative guidance and support.

Len used to appear regularly before me in the High court in the South Island . I would also regularly meet him at legal functions . It was always a pleasure to spend time with him . His humanity and care for his clients was boundless . His civility in court at all times ( and many were trying times ) was equally impressive . He will be sorely missed .

Such a great shock and sadness to hear of Len's passing. I will always remember his strong presence during the first stumbling steps in my early career.

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends. Please take comfort in the words found at 2nd Thessalonians 2:16,17.

The Law was richer for his presence in it. Remembered especially from his days at Whakatane and more recently a brief encounter at the 2023 CBA Auckland conference. Great man, great lawyer, great example. Rest well Len.

They were uni best friends, so our families shared much in early days Taradale, Hastings. Len always the big strong yet nice cousin leading us troops along. Still same for many others b4 he passed over. He will be missed in our big clan. Blessings to All his team.

Len a great mate who will be sorely missed. There were very few things we disagreed on, in fact can't think, of any. We both liked to keep the B's honest.
unfortunately, I go overseas on Saturday so my thoughts will be with you all.

Such a shock to learn of Len's passing. The mentor is supposed to go first. Great memories of a young Len who thrived in the law and regarded Otago university as his spiritual home. So many memories of Len's early practice days in Whakatane in "the old firm" - great professional and social times. He has left his mark - in law and at play, and in his fervent support of the Highlanders and Otago rugby teams. May he rest in peace and may Moira and the family feel the love and respect of his many friends and colleagues at this very sad time.

ANDERSEN KC, Leonard Andrew (Len). Born April 04, 1952. Passed away on September 16, 2023. Some 35-40 years ago, Len took 4 law school graduates under his wing. We could not have been luckier. To be mentored by Len was to be mentored by a brilliant court lawyer: know your case, better still, know your opponent's. Know your law, know your facts and know your judge. We were taught how to be well prepared, to be courageous in argument and quick of thought. We learned that to be a good lawyer is to be human and understand humans. People make mistakes. Some people do terrible things. Others need protection. All of them are entitled to high quality representation. In these years, at Osborne Gray in Whakatane, we learned all of this from Len. But, we also learned that it was necessary to have fun and relax. To live life, and have a laugh in the company of friends, all the better with a glass of Central Otago Pinot in your hand! Many years on, we are now judges or senior lawyers ourselves. We owe Len a lot. He will be missed. Sarah, Siobhan, Bruce and Stephen.
