Derek ANGUS Obituary

QSM, JP
It is with great sadness Derek's family wish to advise of his passing on Thursday, May 2, 2024 at Rowena Jackson Retirement Home, aged 86 years. Much loved husband of the late Thelma Frances Angus (nee Hazley). Cherished and loving father and father-in-law of Debbie and the late Bruce Reinke, Robyn and Ross Wilson, Hamish Angus and Sinead Mulhern. "The best grandad in the world" to Aleisha Reinke, Andrew and Liam Wilson, and Isla, and Shae Angus. A dearly loved brother, brother-in-law, and uncle. The family would like to gratefully acknowledge the generous support of Dawn Acker and the wonderful staff at Rowena Jackson Retirement Home for their care and attention initially in the Edinburgh wing and latterly the Salsbury Wing. A service to celebrate Derek's life will be held in the Avenal Park Chapel, 75 Fox Street, on Wednesday, May 8 at 2.00pm, followed by refreshments and a time for sharing. In lieu of flowers, donations to Southland Charity Hospital Trust would be appreciated and may be left at the service. Messages to 56 Moa Street, Invercargill.

A very good man, a loyal mate. I have fond memories of Derek in the 1981 intake to Parliament.
He had my my back. We were staunch colleagues. Derek invited me home to the best parts of the country and nicest people. Thelma was a much loved visitor to Wellington.
Now at home with The Lord after a very long and worthwhile life.
Heaven now has three of my Southland mates, John Chewings, Norman Jones and Derek Angus all role models all Patriots.

Derek was one of those sound solid individuals of whom their peers in their home area send to Wellington as their representative in Parliament. Derek knew the beat of the rural community better than most which is what Sir Brian Talboys saw in his character and encouraged him to stand.
His values were sound and always listened to by his colleagues.
Politics has changed since his days but those values he brought to Wellington are still in need. My sympathy to all his family.
Don McKinnon. Auckland.

Derek was helpful, thoughtful and kind. With Thelma at his side, they were a team who could always be relied upon. It was particularly so in the 80s with major economic changes in Southland farming.

Derek helped many in a multitude of ways, usually without fuss or publicity. He just did it. And not merely during his nine years as an MP. Judy (my new bride) and I enjoyed his friendship and we remain grateful for his practical guidance. He helped many in ways which were, and sometimes still are, confidential.

Wallace was special. Stand tall in memory Derek.
