I'm really sorry to hear of David's sudden death. I knew David from University of Canterbury post-grad study. He identified and stuck with a topic that was not viewed as very significant at the time, going on to have a major impact on research and practice and creating benefits for New Zealanders way beyond the academic realm. I'm sorry David didn't get to live longer and we all didn't get to benefit from his being on this planet longer. Best wishes for his family, particularly Carol who I remember well from CUTC days.

A huge loss, and another huge reminder that we are not bullet proof. David befriended me in my early years at IGNS/GNS Science, and our young boys Josh and Lewis were great friends. David was so involved in everything, and I'd often wonder where he got his energy. Will miss not having him round. Farewell David.

Sending sincere condolences to Carol, Joshua and extended whanau. As a colleague of David's from Massey University we recognise the huge void his departure makes in the lives of all those who loved and cherished him. We celebrate the incredible generosity David extended to students and peer colleagues and the many communities of engagement he worked with in the disaster management space, in Aotearoa and internationally. We already miss your energy, the barrage of great ideas you brought to every meeting, and the unfailing way you supported your students and collaborators. Arohanui DJ.
