Dennis ROSE Obituary

Much loved father of Micky, Sally, Timmy and Jeremy, grandfather of 11, great-grandfather of three, and friend to many. Died on Friday, 6 February, 2026, at the Coastal Villas Rest Home in Raumati; aged 92. A working economist for close on seven decades, Dennis was "plugging away" on a paper on the role of monetary policy in a fully employed economy just weeks before his death. Dennis was, among other things, the chair of the New Zealand Council for Civil Liberties for much of the 1970s and 80s, an anti-war activist and member of the Committee on Vietnam, and the chair of the Friends of the Bolton Street Cemetery. He was always an advocate for fairness. Dennis loved Paekakariki and lived there for close to 40 years. He was a key identity within the village, known for his determined walking "circuits" and his willingness to share his enthusiasm for local history research or whatever article or book he had last been inspired by.

He will be missed.

A service remembering Dennis' life will be held at St Peter's Village Hall, Paekakariki, at 2.00pm on Monday, 16 February.

Dennis , it's been decades since those years we all spent together .
It feels right to imagine that somewhere beyond this horizon you may meet the beautiful Lisa again .
Not as memory , not as longing , but as two spirits recognising one another in the quiet light of another road .
She'll be driving an old red beetle , engine humming , dust lifting softly behind you . The horizon wide and unburdened.
No sorrow now . Just the long journey home .

Haere pai e Dennis. Kia ara ake te huarahi ki mua i a koe.

Dennis was the much loved friend of Janet and Nelson Kenny for most of their adult lives.
He is remembered with love and gratitude by Janet Kenny. We were so lucky to have met him.

Visiting the Rose family across the railway lines from our home was always a powerful experience, Dennis always like a wise old owl, warm smile and intelligent eyes. He was a big man with huge Mana, always happy to give advice to others. A man of peace and dignity
