George RITCHIE Obituary

On Saturday, February 14th, 2026, at Parkwood Lodge, Waikanae. Much loved husband of Mickey (dec), father and father-in-law of Iain & Malin, Jo & Chris, Will (dec) and Angus (dec). Father-in-law of Anick and granddad to Chiara, Tiane, and Cameron. George was a taonga (treasure) to all his family and the wide circle of friends he and Mickey had. He was also a loved uncle to nieces and nephews in New Zealand and in Scotland where he was born. Our dad was an awesome father who instilled in his children integrity, honesty, and self-confidence. He was fun-loving, generous, adventurous and would do anything to help his friends and neighbours. Farewell Dad, to a full and rich long life well lived. Thank you to long-time local friends, June and Johnny, and to the superb whanau at Parkwood Retirement Village who provided enduring kindness and exceptional care. Donations to the Parkwood Trust Incorporated, PO Box 117, Waikanae 5250 would be appreciated or may be left at the service. A service to celebrate George's life will be held at Cedarwood, 17 Parata Street, Waikanae on Thursday, 19th February 2026, at 11am, followed by a private cremation.

George, I worked with you in NZ Shipping Company Wellington and last saw you at the Company's function in Christchurch, you were a damn fine fellow. I can remember Mickey coming into the Office with the sad news on Angus, you were on the old Suffolk heading to the Breakers yard in Taiwan. RIP old friend.

My many and sincere condolences to all of George's family. I am George's cousin - through the Scottish McDonell line and I live in Brisbane. I first met George, Mickey and other cousins when he, Heather and Mary were arranging the Clan Gathering in Dunedin in 2013. Although I first met them in person at the Gathering, it felt as if I had known them and all of my cousins for a great length of time. We were all united by our Scottish ancestry and for this I will be forever grateful. What a time we had at the Gathering. I will miss George's and my exchange of emails and I am also so very grateful for his sending me - quite a few years' ago now - his ancestry chart and information. I have that and the photo of the Clan at the Gathering in a photo album I am compiling of my Scottish ancestry. I also have a framed photo of this on the wall in my family history room and George and Mickey feature prominently in that photo. How thankful I am that George, Heather and Mary organised and arranged the Gathering - how glad I am to have met so many cousins, a few of whom I am still in contact and how grateful and glad that I met George - a true gentleman and a true Scot. I will miss seeing him in the photos Heather always takes when they get together. How much I appreciated being able to share the livestream of George's celebration of life.
Dear George, may you rest in peace and be reunited with loved ones who have gone before you.
Your cousin Marion nee McDonell Atkinson in Brisbane

To my beloved Grandad,

It saddens me to my core that I won´t be able to see you again, but I am grateful and blessed to have the memories we shared to hold onto. It was always a pleasure to talk with you and spend time together, even though we were so far apart.

I will love you always.

Your granddaughter,
Chiara Ritchie

Our Dad Warren's Cousin George 'popped up' in Waikanae, with huge thanks to Heather McLay, sometime in both George & Warren's mid 70's - that was a huge thing for our Dad, because George was such a very special person - so full of kindness & good humor; and in the years that followed they became good friends.
We want to pass on our sincerest sympathy to George's family for their loss - the world will be a lesser place without his presence.

To Jo and Iain -
So sad to hear of your father´s passing - he was always a good friend throughout our joint time at the Shipping Corporation - a level headed, calm person whose opinion and direction was always well respected. I am especially sad as I planned to call on him next month when visiting from Australia. Hard to believe your lovely Mother departed nearly 10 years ago but now they will be together! Rest in peace George - Mick Payze
