Graeme MACANN Obituary

19 July 1946 - 17 January 2026
Graeme died peacefully at Ryman's Logan Campbell Village early Saturday morning, following a long and courageous battle with melanoma. He is farewelled with love and many fond memories by wife, Brenda; sons Todd and Glen, and their respective wives Charlotte and Carla; son Blair (deceased); son Michael and partner Claire: and a wonderful bunch of grandkids – Zach, Sam, Ruby, Austin and Harlan who were all much treasured by their proud Grandad. Caring friend and brother, brother-in-law and uncle to Rod (deceased), Stuart and families. Loved and respected son-in-law to Bev Speight and brother-in-law to Diane, Kevin, Deborah and families. So very sad to say goodbye. So comforting to know Graeme has finally found his peace and comfort. Graeme's funeral will be held at Purewa Cemetery, 100 St Johns Road, Meadowbank, Auckland at 2.00pm on Thursday 22nd January 2026. No flowers please, but donations to the Melanoma NZ Research Fund or the Tiritiri Matangi Sanctuary would be welcome. If you wish to watch by livestream please contact Aroha Funerals.

I knew Graeme through his work for teachers through PPTA. He was a committed activist who supported members in a variety of regional roles, then as president. He was a principled and insightful leader who built bridges and encouraged ethical behaviour.

I worked alongside Graeme on the New Appointments National Panel for Kahui Ako from its inception. He was always supportive, professional, and generous with his knowledge. Graeme was a talented and highly skilled leader in education, and his contribution to the sector will never be forgotten. I will always treasure the books he gifted me. My condolences to his family. Kia kaha kia maia kia manawanui.

Graeme appointed me to the New Appointments National Panel for Kahui Ako and trained me to do the job. He was always professional, patient and supportive. He placed the interests of learners first and he was passionate about improving the capability of teachers. He made a huge contribution to education in Aotearoa over his lifetime.
My sincere sympathy to all his family and friends. May he rest in peace.

A great boss who supported me through very difficult times and with whom I shared a wonderful time on a school trip to Japan with students

I worked alongside Graeme as a PPTA Executive member during the bulk funding battles throughout the 1990s-early 2000s. His knowledge, I sought, during my PhD Journey, formed part of my project development about inclusive education. I was fortunate to assist his special needs students when he was Principal at Rosehill College. A talented and devoted educator who will be sorely missed and always remembered Rest in peace - Dr Judy Selvaraj
