DSIR Drugs & Alcohol Group Christmas 1983

It was with great sadness that I heard of Graeme's death this week.
I worked with Graeme in the Drugs and Alcohol Group of DSIR and then ESR for about 14 years from 1982 and I had the utmost respect for his knowledge of the field of drugs analysis and his abilities as a forensic chemist. He was always happy to share his knowledge and I learnt an enormous amount from him, including better grammar (I hope this is all correct or he'll be getting his red pen out!).
Graeme fully supported women's rights to equal employment and was happy to have many of us working part time to enable juggling family commitments and employment, even though there were few hours in the week when it was possible to have all present for group meetings.
Graeme was the most honest person I have ever met. I don't believe he was capable of exaggeration and he would go out of his way to ensure that it never happened, which was especially important for forensic work.
Graeme understood the importance of continual self-improvement and he demanded that we met his exacting standards. We are all better for doing so. He will be greatly missed.

I recall Graeme as a delightful HVTC tramping companion who could entertain the group with a story or two. My condolences to his family.

My sincere condolences to all of Graeme's family. I knew Graeme through his voluntry work for Greater Wellington Regional Council in the Wainuiomata Water Collection Area, where he helped with the pest animal monitoring. I found Graeme pleasant and fun to be around. He was a stalwart of the monitoring programme in its early years, and he will leave a lasting legacy in the form of the graphs that have given us the knowledge to better manage the pest animals in the area to the benefit of our native flora and fauna. Rest in peace Owen Spearpoint (GWRC and HVTC).
