Ivan DOWNES Obituary

20 July 1957 - 12 February 2025
Passed peacefully at home. Eldest son the late Brian and Marie Downes. The man was a tin-arse at the pokies, he loved his music, quizzes, books, beer, and his niblings, particularly Jade, Harper and Grace, and he will be sorely missed, along with his toes. A service to celebrate all our friendships with Ivan will be held in Cornwall Manor, corner Knights Road and Cornwall Street, Lower Hutt, on Thursday, 20 February at 2.30pm.

I was very sorry to receive a call from Phillip Mai telling me of Ivan´s passing. Like my brother Brett and Willie Quinn taken much too young. Thinking of Ivan takes me back to Cheshire St and different happier times.
I baby sat Ivan on occasion, he was close to Brett in age. I last saw him at a Z Petrol station in Wellington CBD a number of years ago.

Sincere condolences Evan Gray

Old friends occupy a special place in your life. They go back to places that newer friends can never reach and Ivan and I go back to when we were 5 or 6.

Maybe it´s a function of getting older, but he was very fond of reminiscing. Often we´d go back to some of those early memories - times long gone, but still alive because we shared them.

Listening to Dark Side of The Wall, one of the first times, on a dark and stormy night. Treks across town to the Freyberg pool with coke spiders on the way home. Convincing people we were twins (at least we told them so, who knows if they believed us or even cared - we at least enjoyed the game).

No doubt his love of music will be recalled, and we shared (what was for me at least) our first concert - Sweet, in the old Town Hall. I have vivid memories of the bus ride home and Ballroom Blitz still ringing too loudly in our ears. Or returning to Wellington from Asia midweek, sick with hepatitis, only to find myself standing, shakily, with him that Friday night at Athletic Park for a Dire Straits concert he´d got me a ticket for.

I last saw Ivan in 2018, but we have stayed in regular touch. Having converted him to a Chiefs fan in the NFL, I was to chat about the poor outcome of the Super Bowl the week of his passing. Sadly never to be.

What I valued above everything about him was his approach to life. Even with his health concerns in recent years I never once heard him complain or question, "Why me?" Tho he was a great one for reminiscing, when talking about his current life, his attitude was always looking forward, not back with regret. I´m pleased that was able to praise him on that when I had the chance.
I´m going to miss him even more as the years roll on. Vale, Ivan
