John BOOT Obituary

Born 1943, of Nelson and Wellington, passed peacefully in his sleep on Thursday 12th February 2026 at Metlifecare Karori, aged 82. A yacht-loving Civil Engineer who worked with Wellington City Council over half a century; proud Nelson Boys College Old Boy; he served 25 years with the NZ Territorial Army #K210413, attaining the rank of Major; was a driving force in NZ Sea Scouts Assoc. for many years, and when not making, sailing, or dreaming of boats was often found glued to the history channel or with his nose in an old war book. Dearly loved husband of Chris; loving father of Stephanie, Liz and James; beloved Grandpa of Arwen, Poppy, Zoey and Gryffin; and lifelong friend and brother to Gillian. Heartfelt thanks to the Karori Village staff for their care of John in his final months, and to the hospital staff of Blenheim, Nelson, Wellington and Oxford UK for their intensive medical help when most needed. A memorial service will be held at Karori Cemetery Main Chapel, 15 Rosehaugh Avenue, Wellington, on Thursday 19th February 2026, at 11.00am. A second farewell will be held in Nelson at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the RSA.

I worked with John at Wellington City Council when I was just starting out as an engineer and he was kind and gentlemanly and had a great sense of humour. Rest easy John and may the wind fill your sails.
