I met Johnin 2001 while doing my Master's degree in NZ. He helped me through theidentification of my Lepidoptera samples. He was always nice and kind, ready tohelp and share his extensive knowledge of NZ entomofauna; a true gentleman. You will be missed, John.

I am forever grateful for having known John. He was so generous with his knowledge and just a very special man who contributed so much to NZ's natural history. I will never forget the time spent with him, either in the field or over some glasses of wine, where he was always so full of enthusiasm and incredible wit. Sympathies to his family whom he loved so much and was so proud of.

Very sad to hear the news that John has left us. He was an amazing mentor for many years, particularly in the 70s and 80s when we spent many pleasant evenings together around a light collecting moths. We will miss his quiet, unassuming wisdom, his huge experience and expert knowledge, as well as his support and friendship. We are sad that COVID prevents us from being at the celebration of his life tomorrow. Best wishes to the family.

John was great company in the field and a hugely knowledgable field biologist. His immense contribution to New Zealand and Pacific science will endure.

John was mentor and I will cherish great memories I took from the time we worked together. He was such a great scientist and like all of the great people he was so humble. We've lost a great human.

This is such a great shock to me. Only 7 days ago we were discussing our mutual interests in ghost moths. John provided me with such generous insights into ghost moth systematics and biology over the decades since my PhD days and it was a great pleasure to name a new genus, Dugdaleiella, in honor of his contribution to the study of these moths. I will greatly miss him always.

Very sad to hear that John has left us. I have enjoyed learning from him more about butterflies and other insects in the past and receiving his feedback and positive comments about our magazine. I will miss you, John!

I met John as a young postdoc at Landcare while working in the Invasive Invertebrates team about 15 yrs ago. Although I was Auckland-based, I made a number of trips to Nelson and would often see John there. John was a lovely man, very kind and generous with his time and knowledge to young scientists. I am so sorry for your loss and hope that you find solace in the wonderful memories you have of him.
