John was a big part of my childhood. My best friend was his son Julian. I spent many a day at the Terris household, and John would often cross my path, or I should say, I would cross his. His dulcet tones, a well measured timbre of voice, crafted from years of Broadcasting would make me wish for such a manly sound to emanate from my immature mouth. John would engage in morning exercise rituals, and the slap and crash of energetic, but relatively short exertions could be heard through the walls. He had a great sense of humour, and I took it upon myself to entertain John, usually with interpretations and impressions from the plethora of English skit comedy that flooded our screens daily in the 70s and 80s. Once the American show "The A Team" began screening, John took delight to me referring to him as "Mr T". It was great fun for Julian and I to train into Wellington, where both our fathers plied their trade at Parliament buildings. John had an apartment inside the main building as part of his package as deputy speaker of the house, I was very impressed! Much later, I enjoyed conversations with John as he continued his political career in local, and as he kindly attended my own Fathers funeral some twenty years ago. Go well John, thank you for some memorable and excellent times. XXX
