A man with endless energy and enthusiasm for any and every endeavour it seemed. Most striking of all, perhaps, is that wherever he went, he always fostered a real spirit of camaraderie and friendship among those around him. For this, he will be missed by all of us who had the privilege of knowing him

I knew Matthew since February 1999 and quickly gave him the nickname "massive" for his massive love of life, massive love of Classics/teaching, massive love of the Patriots and, later, massive love for Catherine/Christian. I lost every gentleman's bet regarding our first-year teaching evaluations and could never keep up with his enthusiasm for Almost Everything of Importance. Missing him now and always.

I can't believe my longest and dearest friend Matthew has gone. I have known him since he was 5 years old - I would go around his house and he would dress up as a Greek soldier such was his love of the classical world.
I will miss you so much old friend you were one in a million
My love to Catherine and Christian.

Matthew, I'm so sorry to see you go, and I'm sorry I won't make it to Wellington to commemorate your life. You were an inspiration to me and so many others, and your support was fabulous.
Your laughter and wonderful sense of humour, and the passion you brought to your teaching is legendary.
My thoughts are with Catherine and Christian and your siblings in this sad time.
Go well and happy trails.

Matthew inspired me with so much passion and commitment to the Ancient World! He created and delivered one of my favourite courses on Troy and the Trojan War. I will also be forever grateful for his continued support of all Classical Studies teachers, and his presentation at our 2017 Wellington conference was a highlight! NZACT members all send all best wishes to the family and deepest sympathy!
All my love to Matthew's family!

I'm so sorry to hear of Matthew's passing. He was such a ball of positive energy around the classics department. And at the Bristol. And during his short stint in the Silver Urns!
Obviously, too, any memory of Matthew would be incomplete without reference to that hat!
Kia kaha to all.
