Very sorry to hear - so late - of Mike's death. Mike was my 'flat-mate' when I first moved to Wellington and helped me learn my way round the bureaucracy. Thereafter we never worked in the same organisation but we kept intersecting within the public policy network. He managed to combine a sharp intelligence and a broad perspective with a personality that was warm, kind, considerate and polite - almost courtly. Sad.

Mike was a very good friend of mine in Wellington, Hanoi and (meeting many times) Hong Kong. He was a talented member of The Treasury in Wellington and later gave good advice to many governments including PRC, Vietnam and Pacific Islands. I enjoyed his droll wit and his excellent choice of wines. I'm saddened by his untimely passing and extend heartfelt condolences to Diana, Sue, and all other family members and others who knew and worked with him. We all share in this sadness: he would want us to be of good heart nevertheless and thoughtfully take a cup or two to celebrate our passing friendships.
