Peter McGUINNESS Obituary

Peter, born in Wellington 1947, son of Laurie and Kath, passed away peacefully on Sunday the 26th November, 2023 surrounded by his loving wife Susie and his seven children - Beth, Clare, Lauren, Sean, Chris, Kate and Kelly. Peter was blessed to have 10 grandchildren who adored him and three loving brothers - Jim, Brian and Mark, along with their amazing families. He had many friends and acquaintances and will be fondly remembered within the Wellington construction industry. It goes without saying that Peter enjoyed a full life. He was a foundational member of LT McGuinness Ltd along with his father and brothers; a strong supporter of many Catholic schools and Churches within the Wellington region; a proud member of Hutt Old Boys Marist Rugby Club and the Hutt Bowling Club; an active member of the South Packard Club and the Founder and Patron of The Ryhaven Charitable Trust. Peter was a generous contributor to many charities and societies within the Wellington Region. Many will remember Peter as a big man with a big laugh and big heart who found more joy in giving than receiving. We were all truly blessed to have him in our lives. In lieu of flowers donations to Te Omanga Hospice would be appreciated and may be left at https://www.teomanga.org.nz/support-us/donate/ Requiem Mass for Peter will be held in Ss Peter and Paul's Church, 60 Knights Road, Lower Hutt on Thursday 30th November, 2023 at 11:00am. A private burial will take place. Refreshments will follow Thursday's Mass at the Hutt Bowling Club, 6 Myrtle Street, Lower Hutt. Rosary will be recited in the above Church on Wednesday evening (29 November) at 7:00pm.

Dear Susie and family
We were so very sorry to hear of Peter's death and know that he will be greatly missed by you and your family. You will be very proud of his generosity to his community and his fine qualities shared at his requiem mass. We know Kate
through Laura and know of Chris who our son Kieran flatted with in your Wellington apartment in its early days. We were at the Mass, but at the bowling club!
Peter must have been a much-loved father, grandfather and husband. You will have treasured memories.
With our love and prayers

My deepest sympathy to Susie and Peters family and wider McGuinness families at the loss of their father and brother a great dad and man .
I first knew Peter when he and Brian joined Jim to manage L.T.M after their father Laurie suddenly pasted away..

It is with great sadness and shock that we received this sad news a few minutes ago. Our memory of your family next door and Peter hanging out with our late father Jeffrey across the fence is still fresh in our memories. Peter was a life saver in some instances after Dad passed. No words can express our sorrow. Susie and family, please accept our condolences. You are all in our prayers as we hold you close in our hearts during this difficult time. I remember coming to 106 Derby to meet you in the early days of your courting Susie. Well Pete its fair to say one heard your voice and that laugh before actually meeting you. Your visits over the years were enjoyed by all. Loved knowing you, hilarious banter, laughter and fun as we emptied out Poppy's numerous sheds into skip after skip . Thanks for the memories Pete it was a pleasure.

Penny & I were very saddened to hear of the loss of Pete. From the time he joined up with the management of the club many years ago, I was part of the Management Committee that he was on. Having been a club captain for 15 years at HOBM I worked very closely with Peter on many issues and you were never going to win every argument but he always came back with a solution. When he took over as Chairman of the Rugby Club he was able to direct our committee in to developing a very solid committee and club. As already mentioned by others he was a larger than life person who gave his all to everything he touched and was always interested in knowing how you and your family were going. We both happen to have same birth date and would celebrate together at the club. Our sincere condolences go to Susie and the family - he will be sorely missed and will leave a large hole in our hearts.

Kindest regards
Graeme & Penny Coley

My condolences to Susie, Beth, Clare, Lauren, Sean, Chris, Kate and Kelly as well as Peter's brothers Brian, Mark and Jim and extended McGuinness family on the death of Peter. I have known the McGuinness family for over thirty years and they were always very supportive of the projects I was involved with promoting the Irish Community in New Zealand. The obituary really says it all. I had the pleasure of working alongside Pete for a dozen or so years on the committee at HOBM. His insight, drive, generosity, intelligence, strength of character, empathy and humour all made him the man he was, and a man to whom The Eagles owe so much. Anyone like me who had the pleasure of working closely with Pete are far better people for the experience. A mighty Totara has fallen. RIP Pete.

Peter will be remembered by me very fondly as a fellow parishioner who did a lot for the community. I met him with 3 team members at an awards ceremony where we were given one trophy for winning at bowls. He replicated the trophy so we could each have one. We rewarded him with a bottle of expensive whisky . RIP Peter and condolences to your family.

Dear Susie and family, on behalf of the family of Frank and Eileen McGuinness, we would like to extend to you the understanding of what it is like to lose a very precious person ( having lost our younger brother Michael McGuinness 2 years ago). My memories of Peter are of his wonderful laughter and warmth at our McGuinness family reunion in Hanmer. In addition, I was a bridesmaid and Peter a Best Man at a mutual friend´s wedding in the 70s. PS I am a good friend of Chris and Mike McDonnell. Tricia McGuinness xxxx
