Peter WINTHROP Obituary

17.4.1952 - 26.1.2026

Our dearest Peter passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Monday, January 26, 2026. His courage, resilience and positivity whilst living with Parkinson's was an inspiration to all. A much loved husband of Melanie, father and father-in-law of Lisa and Grant, Emma and Christo, and Matt and Angeli, and dearest Grandad of Tiaan, Amber and Will. We will miss him terribly. Special thanks to the wonderful nurses at Mary Potter Hospice, Porirua, in particular, Jen, Gabe and Louise, and to his doctors, especially Janet and Aiofe. A big shout out to Susie and Imelda at the Mary Potter Porirua community programme and the volunteers, especially Kevin who was a wonderful companion to Peter, and Barb who helped create his book of reminiscences. Many thanks to the Nurse Maude carers who provided day-to-day support for Peter, especially Marie and Manjula. His funeral will be held at St Mary's Whitby, Friday, January 30 at 11.00am. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Mary Potter Hospice.

I worked with Peter at Wellington Free Ambulance. He was a very good paramedic and had a great sense of humour. I have memories of playing a round of golf with him for the Fitzgerald Cup and laughing so much I could barely hit the ball.
Condolences to Mel and family.
Rest in peace Peter.

I worked with Peter in the international department at the New Zealand Red Cross. When I joined in 2016, he took me under his wing, showing me the ropes. What amazed me most was the many friends he had across the Pacific built, on his work on promoting first aid in these many pacific island Red Cross societies. Always gentle, compassionate, funny, and extremely competent, Peter was a great colleague and an amazing man. I was so sorry to hear of his illness and now his passing. I will remember Peter fondly. My Sincere condolences to his family.

I have so many memeroies of Peter. We worked together at Cable St, with a tight shift who had each others backs. A caring compassionate officer who shared his humour. A good leader. Later we worked again in Thorndon as Shift Managers. Outside work we both lived in Whitby and I recall helping Peter with the building of his house, had some laughs in doing so. Peter your time to rest mate, duty done. Condolences to Mel and the family.

I worked with Peter at the Wellington Free Ambulance. As a volunteer, I crewed a front line ambulance with Peter at both Porirua and Paraparaumu ambulance stations.

I later joined the paid staff as an ambulance officer and Peter was my shift manager from time to time. He was a fantastic man, a compassionate and professional ambulance officer and a great leader.

Peter taught me allot over the years, he would guide and mentor me when needed and always had time to chat with me. I will never forget Peter and the contribution he made to the Wellington Free Ambulance.

I send my most sincere condolences to Melanie and family. May Peter now rest in peace.

Thank you Peter, you were 1 in a million.

Much respect.
