Died peacefully in Wellington on 11 October 2025, aged 85. Much loved husband and sheet anchor of the late Heather McCaskey for 60 years. Close brother of Graeme, Bruce and Gail. Adored father of Luke, Andrea and Hunter Nottage, and loved father-in-law of Hisae, Roy and Sara. Funny Grandad of Moana, Erica, Miah, Liam, Tom, Jake, Isla and Russell. Loved Uncle and friend of many. Richard loved Wellington but was a citizen of the world. Athlete and scholar at Canterbury University then Merton College Oxford. Secretary of Foreign Affairs and Trade (1991-1999), Ambassador to Indonesia, Japan, the United Nations in Geneva and World Trade Organisation. Deputy Chair of the Asia New Zealand Foundation and Inaugural Chair of the National Archives Council. Keen golfer and sailor. A ceremony to celebrate Richard's rounded life will be held at Old St Paul's Cathedral, 34 Mulgrave Street, Pipitea, Wellington, on Wednesday, 5 November at 11.00am.
