I was at the same Cambridge college as Stephen doing my PhD while he completed his Masters. He was a brilliant, original economist - then concerned with sunspot equilibria - and able to span post-Keynesian and other approaches to fundamental problems in the discipline with ease. A warm laugh, a seriousness about his subject but a joy about the social life of a Cambridge postgraduate community will be remembered by many of us who were at Emmanuel College with him. My condolences to his family.

Have just found out that a dear friend from my teenage years has left us. He brought happiness and a true friendship into my life. Though we lost contact after our college years I have never forgotten you Stephen and hoped one day that our paths would cross again. Sadly now this is not to be but the great times we had together will always be remembered. You are one in a million. I wish I could tell you that in person. Life is so short and I hope that you fulfilled everything you wanted to. I am so glad to have had you in my life however briefly and you will always be in my heart. Rest In Peace my old friend. Love Julie

Farewell Stephen. Many thanks for all your contributions to VUW's School of Economics & Finance from 1991, and special thanks for your leadership as Head of School from 2002 to 2008. As a teaching and graduate supervision colleague, you were always a pleasure to work with. Rest in Peace.

Such a nice man - we were students together many years ago.

My condolences to Stephen's family and friends. He was my colleague and, for a time, Head of School at VUW. I had the pleasure to travel with Stephen to North America a couple of times, to interview applicants for lecturing roles. We saw candidates across economics, finance and econometrics, and Stephen's command of these fields and incisive questioning was a thing to behold. I miss him as a colleague, and appreciate the way he guided my early career.

My sincere and deep condolences to Stephen's family and friends. I was a colleague and friend at the Victoria University of Wellington from July 1994 to early 2000. At my first job after finishing degree in the US, he had been my mentor in monetary economics at Victoria, kindly correcting some critical mistakes in the proof of my thesis chapter, which helped me greatly to publish it in a top journal. For those five and half years before I returned to Seoul, we had shared so many good memories, including research collaborations, overseas conference trips, conversations over meals with my young family, just to name a few. He was such a sharp mind as well as a conscientious and warm heart. He will be missed greatly. I believe he will be at peace up there while reading books he had loved so dearly!

My sincere condolences to Stephen's family. I was a colleague of Stephen's for many years at Victoria University of Wellington. Stephen's passion for economics, commitment to teaching, love and skill for rigorous debate, and generous support of his colleagues are some of Stephen's many outstanding qualities that I fondly remember.
