Am very saddened to have just learnt of Stephen's death. I had a bit to do with him when he was the boss at Archives NZ. Not one to mince words. A clear thinker and straight talker. A good guy. A sad loss indeed.

Stephen was my boss for a time at IRD. A great bloke and a mentor without even knowing it. I learnt so much from him and I owe so much of my confidence and the strides I have made at Kainga Ora to him. Always chatted when we saw each other and congratulated each other via LinkedIn. He was so proud of his family and my condolences go out to them. Vale Stephen

I had the pleasure of meeting Steff at one of the very first Wellington Phoenix games we were both Foundation Members and among the first to join Yellow Fever. Our seats in that first season were close and we would share a beer often at the Backbencher pre game and after the game.
For the last couple of years we have both served on FRG where his opinions and views were always valued highly.
My sympathy goes out to his family and close friends take consul in the fact he was loved and respected by many people across all walks of life.
He will most certainly be missed in the stands.
Fly high my friend and hopefully Rangers and the Nix can do the same.

From the other side of the world, as we always joked in our meetings and discussions, all the members of the Spanish Standardization Committee are deeply saddened by his passing and will always be grateful for Stephen's contributions. Those of us who attended the international meetings will greatly miss the passion and brilliance with which he presented his ideas. ¡Que la tierra te sea leve!

I am heartbroken to hear this news.

I had the absolute pleasure of working as Stephen's Executive Assistant while he served as the Chief Data Officer for NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi in 2020. It was a short-term partnership as my New Zealand work visa ran out and it was time for me to move on, but it was a deeply impactful one.

Stephen was an inspiration. He was one of my first bosses to show me what a good boss really looked and felt like. Even with his impressive career, one he was deeply passionate about, he took the time to care for each and every person under him.

I often think about the speech he gave for me on my last day at work in New Zealand. It's been a source of professional inspiration in the years that have passed since. He continued to check in on me and cheer me on quietly in the background all these years, even when focusing on changing the world out there for the better.

I'm so sorry to his family, his close friends and the entire professional of community of New Zealand. This is an immeasurable loss.

I didn't know Stephen well, but admired his work and character via professional channels, and had the pleasure of being placed at a table with him at the NZ Archives conference dinner last year. He was a delight: warm, generous despite me being a newcomer to the field, funny, highly intelligent, perceptive and kind.

Clearly a very special human and one that will be keenly missed. Sending so much love to Stephen's wife, children, family and friends. Vale Stephen.

My sincere condolences to Stephen's family for their incredible loss. I had the pleasure of working with him in the field of archives and information management and he was the definition of a rockstar academic and nothing short of an intellectual inspiration - yet he was even more impressive for the interpersonal qualities he possess. He was kind, gracious, and inspirational, always trying to build other up and to bring the best out of them. He did not waste of moment of his life and painted the world many shades brighter through his existence.
All my thoughts are with you through your loss.
Sincerely
Matthew Moore

This one is hard!
Thanks Stephen for everything you have done to support me, for all the cheeky jibes, for all the stories shared and for always taking the time to listen to mine and just for being one of those great humans that stroll into life (wearing a kilt in this case)
You are going to be missed.

I worked for Stephen for a few months when he was at the Office of the Auditor General, and remember him as fiercely intelligent, committed, passionate, and funny - I enjoyed a number of conversations with him on a wide range of topics during the time we worked together. My sincere condolences with Stephen´s sad passing. I fondly remember working for him at the New Zealand Transport Agency when he was the Head of Data and Information. When I think back, I remember him being proudly Scottish. But even more so, that he was willing to embrace all people and managed to build a strong, positive culture that our people enjoyed. He was a great communicator, and an even better collaborator. Someone with a strong sense of purpose, but also a cheeky sense of humour. It was a great privilege to get to know him a little and he will be sorely missed. Rest in peace Stephen.

So sad and shocked to hear this news. Had the absolute honour of knowing Stephen professionally and personally. Always valued his passion and positivity. His willingness to share his knowledge and support others. And one of the most dapper civil servants we'll ever see! Another friend reminisced on the time Stephen turned up in full safari garb at the Service Innovation Lab.
I have many fond memories of fascinating conversations and amusing anecdotes over a coffee or cheeky pint. And that wonderfull dry Glaswegian wit :) Sending much aroha to the whanau.

Very, very sad to hear of Stephen's passing. I never had the pleasure of working with him but got to know him at different events, conferences and other gatherings around Wellington. I liked how he always made time to say hello and have a chat about what he was up to, understand what I was doing and answer my questions! I also appreciated his immense passion and knowledge in the information management space and his willingness to share this with others. I will miss him.

Stephen was one of the first friends i made when I came to NZ. Over the years we have had a lot of laughs and some blazing discussions (some may say arguments lol). He was passionate about the things he cared about; his family, Rangers FC, his Profession and Wellington Phoenix. He had plenty of opinions - I'll miss those I think most of all. Rest easy my friend.

I am so very sorry for your loss Suzanne, Catriona and August - he loved you all very much.

My sincere condolences to the Clarke family.
I have known Stephen for quite some time and was priviledged to work and collaborate with him on some very interesting Information and Records Management type developments such as NZTA's standardisation project, networking when I was a member of the BoD of RIMPA and working with Archives NZ on the Create and Maintain Standard. Stephen was a very knowledgeable, driven and kind person.
Godspeed Stephen, Rest in Peace.
